VR (Virtual Reality) + 5G, open up a new world of applications!

Virtual reality (VR) integrates many technologies such as multimedia, sensors, new displays, the Internet and artificial intelligence, and is an important force leading a new round of global industrial revolution. At present, China's VR consumer market is rapidly cultivating, product forms in the fields of games, entertainment, film and television are more abundant, and business models are gradually becoming mature. Especially this year's 5G commercial use has opened up new horizons for VR applications in a wider range of fields.

At the press conference of the 2019 World VR (Virtual Reality) Industry Conference, Wu Shengwu, deputy director of the Electronic Information Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said that this year's 5G commercial use opens up a new world for the application of virtual reality technology in a wider range of fields. With the assistance of 5G, virtual reality industry applications that require real-time communication and real-time interaction will be practiced and promoted.

In recent years, the scale of China's virtual reality market has expanded rapidly, and industry innovation has continued to emerge. According to market research agency CCID Consulting, by 2021, the size of China's virtual reality market will reach 54.45 billion yuan, with a compound annual growth rate of 95.2%.

Continuous breakthrough in key technologies

"Virtual reality products are also considered as the entrance to the next generation of mobile computing platforms and the Internet, and are expected to become another iconic product after color TVs, computers, and smartphones." Wu Shengwu said.

In recent years, China's virtual reality industrial environment has gradually matured, consumer applications and industry application markets have been continuously opened, and the industrial chain has become more complete. China's rapid development in all aspects of the industrial chain, such as hardware manufacturing, content application development, and business experience promotion, is becoming one of the regions with the strongest innovation and entrepreneurship in the global virtual reality industry, the highest market acceptance, and the largest development potential.

"China's key technologies for virtual reality continue to make breakthroughs, the market scale continues to expand, and industry applications continue to expand." Wu Shengwu said that in terms of technological innovation, China's virtual reality industry has entered a period of rapid patent growth since 2013, and relevant key technologies have further matured. Breakthroughs have been made in technical areas such as picture quality, image processing, eyeball capture, 3D sound field, and machine vision. Technical standards systems covering hardware, software, content production and distribution, applications, and services are being established.

An Hui, deputy chief engineer of China Electronics and Information Industry Development Institute, believes that a new round of technological breakthroughs in 2019 will trigger a wave of virtual reality development. In image processing, resolution, vertigo control, viewpoint rendering, and perspective control have become the next breakthrough directions. In terms of interactive technologies, inertial motion capture, optical tracking, speech recognition, eye tracking, spatial interaction and other technologies will appear on a large scale.

The industry estimates that virtual reality will leverage the trillion-dollar market. At present, China has become the world's most important production place of virtual reality terminal products, and Gore, Xiaomi, Pico and other companies' virtual reality terminal product shipments rank among the top in the world. But it is worth noting that China's virtual reality market in 2018 is still dominated by hardware and content. Among them, the content accounted for the highest proportion, 49.6%; hardware followed closely, accounting for 41.2%; software and services accounted for relatively small, and further potential needs to be tapped.

5G Commercial Expansion Application

Today, virtual reality has penetrated all areas of production and life. For example, VR shopping and VR house viewing allow people to be immersed without leaving home, and VR glasses in the industrial field can help visual assembly, operation training, data acquisition and other production links.

At present, the virtual reality consumer market is rapidly cultivating, product forms in the fields of games, entertainment, film and television are more abundant, and business models are gradually becoming mature. At the same time, virtual reality technology has begun to be used in entertainment, manufacturing, education, medical, transportation, commerce and other fields, and a number of new formats and models have emerged.

"Especially this year's 5G commercial use has opened up new horizons for the application of virtual reality technology in a wider range of fields."

For example, the Central Broadcasting and Television Central Station used “5G + VR” technology for the first time to broadcast live on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala 2019; Shenzhen People's Hospital completed the first 5G + AR (augmented reality) / MR (mixed reality) remote operation in China with the help of 5G network. For hepatobiliary surgery, relevant experts in Beijing provided real-time remote and precise guidance for the operation process; 2,000 kilometers away from Nanchang Public Security Bureau, together with China Mobile, Huawei and other units, the first smart security application of 5G + VR in the real scene in China was launched.

Anhui believes that in 2019, virtual reality will be deeply applied in the fields of manufacturing, transportation, medical and other fields, and the application scenarios will be further enriched. In addition, with the advancement of 5G commercialization, the enrichment of virtual reality content and the enhancement of the sense of interactive experience in virtual communities, the revenue model mainly relying on the purchase of hardware equipment will be transformed, and the virtual market, virtual shopping, and virtual display will also be more users. use.

At the end of last year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology formulated and issued the Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Development of the Virtual Reality Industry, emphasizing the need to promote the application of virtual reality technology in key areas such as manufacturing, education, culture, health, and trade. Wu Shengwu revealed that China will promote the application of virtual reality technology in the above-mentioned key areas and promote the formation and development of new models and new formats.
